Kin’s choices were impossible within the scope of the rules of time travel that Chen laid out, and yet - as with the heavily referenced Doctor Who in the novel itself - the way in which they were broken to achieve Kin’s ultimate goal were perfectly balanced. The twists and turns weren’t at all rote, playing on the expectations of the structure of sci-fi, and instead bringing a smartly written and clever take on the genre. Here and Now and Then Look Inside Here and Now and Then by Mike Chen On Sale: Release Month: Feb 2019 3.75 (8836 ratings by Goodreads) Ebook 11.99 Hardcover 21.59 Trade Paperback 14.39 Ebook 11. In fact, Here and Now and Then surprised me several times throughout. Their effect on Kin, his choices, and the man that he is, was profound and clear - each strong in their own way, they surprised me, never falling into the tired tropes of the genre. And, really, love and family was at the heart of everything in Here and Now and Then, particularly between Kin and the three women in his life. Kin and Miranda’s relationship, fractured across time, isn’t perfect, and certainly has its points of friction, but one thing was ever present in each word they exchanged: love. It was clear, upon reading, that Chen was writing from an emotion that he knew intimately - the love of a child, and the willingness to do whatever it takes to keep them safe - and it added a raw, gut-punch of a feeling as the story continued to unfold. With the stakes raised to the life-or-death of his daughter, Kin takes huge risks in order to save her, with a little bit of unexpected help along the way.
